The Archaeological Museum of Mariana is a contemporary building designed by the architect Pierre-Louis Faloci, constructed with concrete and glass. It serves as a showcase for a magnificent collection that traces the history of Mariana, a Roman colony founded by General Gaius Marius around 100 BC. It became the first bishopric established in Corsica at the dawn of the 5th century. Located at the heart of the historical territory of Mariana, the museum is intimately linked to its archaeological park, which is dominated by the Romanesque church of ?La Canonica?, built in the early 12th century under the direction of the Archbishop of Pisa. The walk continues to the cemetery church of San Parteo, of the same style. The collections presented to the public permanently testify to the daily life of a Roman city in Corsica and the early Christian cathedral with remarkable architectural decoration. The museum's narrative sheds light on the history of Mariana within its Mediterranean context.
Linked to a research center, the museum regularly receives collections as a result of preventive and scheduled excavations conducted in its territory. From this study furniture, objects are selected for their museographical interest and are integrated into the ?Musée de France? collection, which is regularly enriched. The deposits on the Joconde database aim to enhance and disseminate our most beautiful or unique pieces, as well as to display recently discovered objects that may encourage other heritage institutions to request loans.
