The Musée Comtadin is located on the ground floor. It covers the history and culture of the Comtat Venaissin and its capital, Carpentras. Seals and medals offer a glimpse at the history of the pontifical enclave from 1229 to 1791. Comtadin headresses, Provensal nativities, birdcalls, weights and measures, as well as an outstanding collection of bells illustrate the customs of the Comtat. The Duplessis Museum, located on the first level, presents collections of paintings spanning from the 16th to the early 20th century. They draw their origins from the cabinet of Monseigneur d'Inguimbert, the bishop of Carpentras from 1735 to 1757 and founder of the Inguimbertine Library and the museum as well. The collections include a «Conception» by Pierre Parrocel(1670-1739), marine landscapes by Joseph Vernet(1714-1789), as well as portraits, like the one of the Abbé de Rancé attributed to Hyacinthe Rigaud(1659-1743). Donations and bequests have contributed to constituting what is by now an important ensemble of works by artists from the Comtat Venaissin: Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld(1758-1846), one of the first outdoor landscape painters, Evariste Bernardi de Valernes (1816-1896), influenced by his friend Edgar Degas, and the Laurens brothers. The younger brother Jules' (1825-1901) taste for the Orient is expressed through his works and his donation to the museum of four large rare canvases brought back from Persia in the middle of the 19th century. Joseph Siffrède Duplessis (1725 - 1802), the museum's namesake, was a painter in the court of Louis the XVI and is represented by a handsome ensemble of portraits.
